CLEVEDON: Popular since 1829, Clevedon remains an undiscovered delight for the discerning visitor to explore and enjoy. Fascinating links with great literary figures and superb architectural features give clues to a noble past, whilst outstanding area's of natural beauty add to the unspoilt charm of this small Victorian seaside town...The name Clevedon derives from the original Celtic 'dun' a hill fortress and Saxon 'cleafan', split or divide, with the history of a village settlement that dates back to the Domesday Book and a magnificent early 12th century church built on Celtic foundations.

Clevedon described by Sir John Betjeman as a 'beautiful haven of quiet'. The landscape of the countryside, coast and the seven hills around which Clevedon was built, enhances the timeless quality of the town, preserving an atmosphere of tranquil peace and a sense of being untouched by the outside World.

The romantic associations of Clevedon are reflected in its evocative place names:- Lovers Walk which leads to Ladye Bay: The beautiful Poets Walk along the cliff to Wains Hill, the ancient weathered pines, arbutus,yew,holly,sweet chesnut and ilex oak that dress the town are reminders of a more gracious era.

CLEVEDON COURT... A 14th century Manor House now owned by the National Trust and open to the Public during the Summer months, has been the home to the Elton family since 1709. Generations of the Eltons planned much of Clevedon and bought wealth and fame to the area, most notably through close associationswith great writers and poets and the manufacture of Eltonware, a highly collectable type of earthenware, its creator Sir Edmund Elton was a skilled potter who also invented the 'Elton Instantaneously Detachable Dress Guard Clip' for women cyclists!!!

Clevedon is set in some of the loveliest scenery in the South West. Ancient broadleaf woodlands. moors, wetland levels, lakes, rivers, hills and valleys rich in wildlife surround the town, where the countryside meets the sea.

Walton Common, is one of the oldest pieces of common land in England, and has some pleasant walks through well preserved woods and beautiful views across the Severn towards Wales.

Clevedon is also famous for its immaculate bowling greens and its harvest of hidden talent, including World Bowls Champion, David Bryant.

Ancient pathways link the villages around Clevedon, which are a delight to discover. Some of the hamlets are mentioned in the Domesday Book, with early churches that date from the 11th century. There are lovely old country pubs and nature reserves with an abundance of Wildlife, including rare species of plants and birds of prey. Archaeological sites of interest include the well preserved Iron Age hill fort at Cadbury Camp, Twickenham, where excavations have unearthed Bronze Age and Roman treasures.
